Jul 28,  · "Serenade To A Cuckoo" closes side one which, for me, is the nugget among the tracks, with Anderson giving vent to a 6-minute interpretation of a classic Roland Kirk melody. EMI have now released a 40th Anniversary Edition of this, along with a few extras/5(43).

One track on the album is a Rahsaan Roland Kirk piece entitled "Serenade to a Cuckoo" with impressive jazz flute playing by Ian Anderson. This album is more of a group effort than the following Tull albums with blues guitarist Mick Abrahams having a prominent role/5().

''Serenade to a cuckoo'' is also known as the first song Ian Anderson learned on the flute. This is definitely not a classic Tull album, but still a very pleasant one, with a nice happy side to it. Anderson and co. seems to have fun playing it. /5 social review comments | Review Permalink/5(76).

Roland Kirk 's "Serenade to a Cuckoo" (the first song Anderson learned to play on flute), their jazziest track ever, is one of the best parts of the album. The drum solo on "Dharma for One" now seems like a mistake, but is understandable in the context of the time in which it was done.

Recorded during the summer of , This Was is the only Jethro Tull album to feature guitarist Mick Abrahams, who left the group shortly after the album came out to form Blodwyn Pig. The title of the album refers to the band moving away from its early blues-based sound, which was referenced in the original liner notes: “This was how we were playing then—but things change, don’t they?”.
